Practice Notes
The reason I write these Practice Notes is to try and create a memory – a history or a trail for those who are following or perhaps for those who are travelling in parallel directions. Perhaps I am running behind, and for some reason those in front did not leave a trail for me to follow. I do know that some have gone before me and they did leave a trail in the form of research and discussion papers, which I and others have followed. This has saved us a great deal of time.
I also know that many people have no interest in leaving or following trails. Some would not even know what a trail looks like. A good example of this is the discussion around petrol sniffing, suicide and juvenile offending. There are solutions out there, but they will not be found by those who are unwilling or unable to read or talk to those who have gone before them.
For my part, if an idea does or does not work, I will record it - a sign post - a trail for others that says come this way - this works - or do not come this way - this does not work. As we know, when it comes to human behaviour, things are not always straight forward. There are often an infinite number of variables and looks can be very deceiving. In addition, we are constantly intervening and altering the situation. What works today may not work tomorrow. This means that we must be very careful about coming to false or narrow conclusions. A false conclusion may waste valuable time and resources, and may even cause harm. This is why I am always replicating my work, that is, repeating it to see if I can obtain the same results - but always trying to move forward.
